HEALTH HERO DESCRIBES CUTTING EDGE BIOTERRORISM AND PUBLIC HEALTH SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGY
Health Hero CEO to appear before U.S. House of Representative’s Medical Technology Caucus
Mountain View, CA - November 14, 2001 - Health Hero Network, Inc. illustrates BASIICS, a new technology designed to enable public health agencies to monitor in near real time selected signs and symptoms reported by patients coming into the Emergency Department and to look for syndromes or patterns of symptoms that could indicate a bioterrorist attack. BASIICS (Biothreat Active Surveillance Integrated Information and Communication System), currently being piloted at Stanford University Hospital, also can be used to track influenza, diarrhea, and other infectious disease outbreaks in a population. Health Hero’s CEO will highlight this new technology, before the U.S. House of Representative’s Medical Technology Caucus on November 15th.
Heath Hero Network is developing BASIICS based on its patented and proven remote health monitoring technology platform, recently awarded “Best Telehealth Technology” by the Health Industry Management Systems Society and “Best Enabling Technology for Disease Management” by Disease Management Association of America. The Health Hero® technology platform, which has been clinically proven and deployed in thousands of patients homes for monitoring of chronic diseases, consists of Health Buddy®, a simple and convenient four-button survey device that plugs into a standard phone line, and web-based applications for programming new questions and for analyzing the resulting data. When used for syndromic surveillance, hospital nurses will simply press buttons to respond to a series questions about patient symptoms displayed on the Health Buddy screen. The data will then be immediately transmitted via a standard phone line to an offsite secure data center. Doctors, researchers, or government agencies will then aggregate and analyze data using a standard Internet web-browser. These tools will enable public health officers and epidemiologists to constantly survey the medical front lines and statistically analyze data in near real time.
On November 15, Health Hero CEO, Steve Brown will report to the U.S. House of Representative’s Medical Technology Caucus about the important role health monitoring technologies can play in the fight against bioterrorism. He will appear before the Caucus, which is examining how America’s innovative medical technology industry can partner with government and health officials to enhance the nation’s capability to respond to any future public health threats. Steve Brown will be among various medical technology leaders speaking including Pamela Bailey, President of the Advanced Medical Technology Association and Susan Alpert, Ph.D.,M.D. the Medical Advisor to the Medical Technology Preparedness Council and former Director of FDA’s Office of Device Evaluation.
